General

What products do you sell?
L & R Shelters Inc. sells building kits for greenhouses and storage shelters. We manufacture these shelters at our shop and all components are made in Canada. Our shelters are do-it-yourself kits, but we do have independent installers around the province (see our Service page) who can assist you. Our shelters are available from 12’ to 30’ wide at any length.

We sell replacement tarps, greenhouse poly, over-wintering poly, shade-cloth, inflator fans and wire-lock etc.

For additional greenhouse supplies, such as heating, ventilation, irrigation etc, please go to our Links page for information.

We also carry a line of Garden Sheds; however there are some delivery restrictions with these buildings.

Do I need a permit for a greenhouse or a storage shelter?
More and more municipalities are requiring permits for any building over 108 square feet, regardless of the intended use. Check with your local building department for their requirements and any local bylaws before making your purchase.

My Municipality needs Engineered Drawings before issuing a permit – do you provide these?
Yes. We provide engineered drawings for all standard-sized buildings. We would be happy to fax these directly to your building department prior to your purchase. We work with an independent engineering firm which has current BCIN codes. Engineered drawings are not provided for any custom orders.

How long does it take for me to receive my order?
Generally, orders are delivered within 2-4 weeks, depending on the season; keep in mind that September to December is our busiest time.

Structure

What size of tubing is used for your frame?
We use 16 gauge, 1x3 galvanized steel tubing for all of our buildings.

What do your kits include?
Each has a 1x3 – hot -dipped galvanized centre ridge with stubs welded on according to the spacing of the arches (various spacing available). The arch is one piece from the bottom to the centre ridge. Most buildings have 2 rows of purlins on each side and a collar tie across the width just under the ridge. (The small buildings have 1 row of purlins and a collar tie is optional). Also included is wind-bracing in the corners, hardware to assemble and wire-lock to attach the cover to the frame.

Covers and other options depend on which shelter or greenhouse is purchased.

Covers

What covers are available for storage shelters?
The shelter kit includes your choice of green or white 12 mil tarp (6.2 oz) – one piece for the body of the shelter and 2 separate pieces for the ends.

What covers are available for greenhouses?
Our standard kit includes a clear 6 mil, 4 year greenhouse poly. We also carry a 6 mil IR/AC – which helps reduce condensation and is often used on the inside layer of a 2 –layer poly house. Also available is 3 mil over-wintering white, 6 mil white and 8 mil clear or white.

What is the warranty of your covers?
The 12 mil tarp and the 6 mil white or clear poly have a 4 year warranty. Life expectancy is 5-6 years.

Anchoring

How do your greenhouses or storage shelters anchor to the ground? Is a foundation required?
The customer will provide the foundation. In the majority of cases a pressure treated 4x4 or a 6x6 beam is used as a mudsill. The beam is anchored with 4’ sections of T-Bar (snow fence posts) which are driven into the ground along the inside of the beam. They are positioned at each frame location at opposing angles and then lagged to the beam.
The kit includes brackets that secure bottom of each arch to the beam.

Can this system be used on asphalt?
With some modifications, the 4x4 or 6x6 beam is still placed on the ground, however, instead of T-Bar driven along the inside of the beam Re-Bar is driven THROUGH the beam at opposing angles to secure.

Can it be placed on a wall?
Yes, a post or knee wall 3’-4’ high is often used with our buildings.

I can’t anchor into my ground what other options are there for me?
A wall of concrete block (retaining wall block) can be used for your building. A beam will still need to be secured to the top of the concrete and then the brackets provided in the kit will secure the arches to the beam.

I’m an organic farmer, pressure treated wood is not an option for me, what else can I use?
We can provide steel anchor posts at each frame for your greenhouse. Depending on the soil conditions, concrete may be needed to secure to the ground.
New products on the market such as bale board which is made from recycled poly.  can be used in place of pressure treated beams.
